We hear of metabolic syndrome but what is it?
It is a cluster of health problems such as high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high blood sugar, low HDL cholesterol and obesity. Yes, obesity is a health problem.
All these increase your risks of heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes.
Now, what causes metabolic syndrome?
An unhealthy lifestyle! Over-eating, being inactive, and gaining weight, especially around your middle. This lifestyle will lead to insulin resistance. This means that your body cannot use insulin properly, and your blood sugar will rise. Over a period of time, you will develop type 2 diabetes.
How will you know if you have metabolic syndrome?
If you are obese (usually fat around your waist), have high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and are resistant to insulin, then you have metabolic syndrome.
Do you need to worry about metabolic syndrome ?
Of course you do because it puts you at high risk for heart disease and your arteries will be clogged with fat because of the high cholesterol levels.
So check out your BMI. You should aim for figures between 19 and 25. Anything more than that means you are overweight and heading towards obesity.
