Your Body Mass Index is one way of finding out whether you are obese or overweight. If you are Caucasian a BMI of 25 means you are overweight while 30 means you are obese. An Asian who is of smaller frame would be overweight if his BMI is 23 and obese if his BMI is 28.
Another method is the waist-hip ratio measurement. This is your waist measurement divided by your hip measurement. If a man’s WHR ( waist-hip ratio) exceeds 1.0, he is obese. A woman whose WHR exceeds 0.9 is considered obese.
A high ratio indicates a lot of fat in the abdominal cavity which could lead to diabetes and heart disease.
Currently available in the market are weighing machines which can calculate your fat percentage too. If a man’s fat percentage is more than 25% he is unhealthy. A woman’s fat percentage should not exceed 30%.
When you know your figures, you will know if you are obese or overweight. You will need to take immediate action to improve your health. Otherwise you will be at risk for diabetes and heart disease.
