Why Protein is Important

PeggyWe know that protein is an important part of our food intake. Why is it important?

Protein is necessary because it is part of our body cells. It is stored in muscles and organs and used to build and repair tissues. It is also needed to produce enzymes and hormones. Besides, it enables our blood to carry oxygen throughout our body.

Our body needs a lot of protein and men require more than women. If we do not have enough protein, we can lose muscle mass and weaken our immune system. Our heart and respiratory system can also become weak. So how much do we need? Our daily protein requirements are 10% to 35% of our total caloric intake.

How does protein affect our weight?

When protein is absorbed in our body, it signals our brain to decrease our hunger. It also maintains muscle mass. However, as we age, our muscle mass decreases especially if we don’t exercise. So when we exercise and stay fit, it will keep our metabolism high and we burn off our fat.

Protein also helps to regulate the rise and fall of blood sugar and insulin so that there are no rapid highs and falls after we eat something sweet.

We can get protein from meat and other food. However, certain foods provide a healthier source than others.

For example, beans, soybeans, nuts and whole grains provide protein without much saturated fat and offer plenty of healthful fiber and micronutrients as well. walnutlong beans
