Peggyfatman onscaleOne of the most common reasons why people want to lose weight is to enhance their physical appearance. There are different ways of losing weight. Some go for weight loss programs, some skip meals, some take laxatives.

A few opt for weightloss surgery when they found that the normal weightloss programs did not work for them.

It has been shown that weight loss surgery can help very obese people whose lives are at stake, to live a healthier and longer life.

However, anyone who wishes to undergo surgery to lose weight should first consult an experienced and knowledgeable bariatric surgeon who is well-versed in weight loss surgery to assess if it is appropriate for him.

Generally, patients who have undergone weight loss surgery are able to lose 50% or more of their extra body weight.  They will also be able to maintain that for the next few years.

What happens is that the patient will be able to lose at least 30% to a maximum of 50% during the first six months after surgery. Thenwithin the year after the operation, he may be able to lose further weight.

In general, those who lost weight through surgery can actually maintain a continuous weight loss of up to 50% to 60% in the next 10 to 14 years after surgery.

However you need to bear in mind that the actual weight loss depends on pre-surgery weight, the kind of surgical procedure, your age,  health condition, whether you are determined enough to maintain the necessary follow-up, to exercise, and also to persist in whatever it takes to maintain the weightloss after surgery. You also need to consider your support system, i.e. will your family, friends, and  colleagues help you by encouraging you to sustain your weightloss efforts?

You need to remember that you have to make lifestyle changes for long-term success with your weight especially after weight loss surgery.

So should you decide on weightloss surgery, good luck and keep up the momentum once you have lost weight.
